South Pacific at Kennedy Center

South Pacific 1:30 PM Sunday Matinee, January 9, 2011 at Kennedy Center

There's a battle on two fronts in South Pacific. Whether it's World War II raging just over the breakers or the war for hearts beating on shore, Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic musical is explosive in every scene and song.

Based on James Michener's Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, South Pacific is a window into the excitement and hardships of 1940s, when happiness was threatened by prejudice as much as the realities of conflict. Directed by 2008 Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher, this classic is here reinvented by Lincoln Center Theater to be a musical that retains all the fun and weight of the original. With a cast of 34 and an orchestra of 26 members, South Pacific includes popular songs such as "Some Enchanted Evening," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair," and "There is Nothin' Like a Dame."
